My favorite childhood video game is "Ratchet & Clank," so recreating Clank was a personal and nostalgic project.
Instead of replicating Insomniac's stylized theme I decided to go down a more realistic route when creating Clank, while also retaining his key features we all know and love. I was always curious about Clank's articulation, particularly in the real world applications behind his joints and mechanical functions; I modeled a ball in socket for his ankles, a hydraulic armpit, pelvis tube and a rotating component for the fingers that would make sense in theory. These were areas I felt Insomniac could improve and I wanted to explore that area of design.
I also felt as though the metal SBSAR files I had on hand weren't what I was looking for, so I made a custom smart material for his brushed metal through Substance Painter.
The background is a direct reference to "Ratchet & Clank 2: Going Commando" game cover for PS2 from 2003.
Enjoy!
